JUDGING COMMENTS

APEX - December 3, 2005 - John Scanlan

Level 6 Still Rings:  About half of the boys received credit for their back lever.
Level 7 Still Rings:  The bonus for the handstand is awarded for a 3-sec hold with the feet off the cables and no large error.  Wrapping the feet around the cables while acheiving the handstand is deducted as a large error or a fall.  One gymnast received the bonus for the handstand, but also received deductions for bent arms and not turning the rings out.

Note: This was a new level competition.

Floor Exercise - Gerrit DeJonge

The athletes need to improve their execution and learn the routines.

Pommel Horse - John Scanlan

Keeping form is very difficult on compulsory routines, particularly when the athlete does not turn his hips into his leg swings. The height of each swing stride swing/scissor is determined by the height of the back leg, not the front leg.

Level 5: Few of the boys performed a distinct wende dismount on the mushroom.

Level 6: Most of the boys took a small/medium deduction for failure to swing the first part of the faint to circle. The split on the flair is sideways and must be maintained throughout the flair, particularly, the back side.

Level 7: Keep working, it'll come.

Still Rings - Mike Brey:

Levels 4 & 5: Competition on rings was okay. The few experienced guys that showed up to the meet performed much better than the first timers. Major issues on rings included swings not getting to the appropriate level (horizontal in most cases), and major form breaks during the mount onto the rings. To maximize the score it is important to keep good form while being lifted onto the rings.

Neil Schmidt

Level 6 & 7: 4-5 Boys had good heel and toe drive on swings, inlocates, and dislocates

Vault - Neil Schmidt

Level 4: Only 4 to 5 boys accelerated all the way to the board.

Level 5: Only 2 vaulters showed extension from the somi before landing.

Level 6 & 7: Only 2-3 handsprings rose because of great heal drive. Everyone else received blocking and height deductions.

Parallel Bars - Stanton Peterson

Level 4 & 5: Overall good routines, most gymnasts need to work on higher swings.

John Scanlan

Level 6 & 7: Many of the boys were assisted with their Moy, for a 0.5 spot deduction and half credit. Many swings were greater than 45 degrees from their required end. After the straddle L, the athlete is required to press to horizontal. Swinging results in no credit.
