USA Gymnastics Professional Memberships & Background Checks

An email was sent in December regarding Professional memberships and the new required background check for USA Gymnastics Professional Members.  We have begun the 2008 competitive season and as we approach such national events as the Men’s National Qualifier, JO Nationals, and the Visa Championships, we would like to reiterate that information in an effort to eliminate any potential issues for coaches and judges.

We would like to ask everyone to be mindful of the expiration date of your safety certification and, more importantly, your Professional membership.  It is taking anywhere from 10 to 30 business days (even longer in a few, more complicated instances) to get a return response on a background check.  Therefore, if your membership expires in April, you need to begin your renewal process by initiating your background check at the end of February or beginning of March.  You will not be allowed on the competition floor at any USAG sanctioned event unless you are a Professional Member, and you cannot get or renew your Professional membership without completing the background check. The notification of the status of your background check will come via email from USA Gymnastics.

The days of waiting until the last minute to renew your membership have passed. Everyone needs to be proactive and address the process for getting your background check completed early so that there are no issues with your Professional membership renewal.

The need for background checks in our industry is evident.  We need to address this issue in a positive manner stressing that we, as professionals, want to assure athletes, parents and the public that the well-being of our athletes is our highest priority.

On this note, please be proactive in communicating the background check topic to the coaches and judges in your area so that no one has any membership issues this season.

 Foreign Athlete Policy

We would like to remind all of the policy regarding permission for foreign athletes living in the United States to compete in our junior program.  To comply with FIG statutes, we have placed a standard form letter on our website so that the parents/coach of a foreign athlete will be able to download it, fill in the required information, and send it to the respective federation.  A link to the FIG federation directory is also provided.  Visit http://www.usa-gymnastics.org/men/ for these documents.

This letter, along with any federation response will need to be kept on file in the event a meet director of any USA Gymnastics sanctioned event requests it.  The permission letter and the federation response may be requested at anytime by USA Gymnastics.

2008 Academic All-American

The Academic All-American application is posted on the Men’s page of the USA Gymnastics website.  An athlete does not have to attend JO National to receive this honor.  The deadline for submission of all materials is April 1.  Please let athletes and coaches know that this is available so that they do not run into conflicts between spring break and obtaining signatures and support letters. The link is http://www.usa-gymnastics.org/men/2007/m-2008AcadAllAmer.pdf.

2008 JO Program Workshops

The 2009-12 Junior Olympic Program will be presented at the 2008 Men’s JO Nationals in Battle Creek, Michigan May 11-12.  Further details regarding this event will come in the near future.  However, please communicate this event to the coaches and judges in your area so that they can plan accordingly.  On this note, we are also looking at hosting two other regionally based workshops not long after the Battle Creek presentation.  We will keep you posted . . .

2010 Junior Olympic National Championships

Bids for the 2010 Men’s Junior Olympic National Championships should be submitted for review by this year’s JO Nationals.  Please pass this information on to any prospective meet hosts that you might be aware of. For information and/or a bid packet, contact Lisa Cooper or Dennis McIntyre.

To:  USA Gymnastics Members

From:   Member Services

As of late, we have had many comments, questions, and concerns about the USA Gymnastics background check process and NCSI, the company facilitating the process.  As with many new programs, there will be challenges and glitches. At this time, we are asking members who have concerns to please email his/her name, professional number and specific concern to Kathy Feldmann, Vice President, Member Services at kfeldmann@usa-gymnastics.org.  She will then forward these to our contact at NCSI.

An example of such a concern would be if someone was charged for a second address and have lived there for 13 years or charged for 2 name changes when she has been married for 14 years – both examples being more than the 10 year time period.

It is not productive to call Member Services or the respective program as Kathy needs the info via email so that she can send the issues to NCSI.   Regarding the charge from the state of New York, it is an unavoidable charge as this is not a charge from NCSI, but from the state of New York.   However, this issue will be looked into as well, but for now the charge of $52 stands. Finally, it is our understanding that first time background checks should be the most expensive since the time line is within the last 10 years; however, future background checks should be closer to the $ 20 - $ 25 range since the check will only be going back 2 years.

As you prepare to book your hotel and airline reservations for our upcoming J.O. Nationals in Battle Creek, be sure to remember that we will be having our first Coaches Workshop for the new 2009-2012 Junior Olympic Program.  The tentative schedule for this workshop is as follows:

Sunday, May 11th 2008 (after Individual Event Finals)

  5:00 pm - 7:00 pm - Workshop Session I

Monday, May 12th 2008

9:00 am - Noon - Workshop Session II

1:00 pm - 3:00 pm - Workshop Session III

3:00 pm - Workshop Ends

I hope that this preliminary information will help you to plan accordingly for the upcoming 2008 J.O. Nationals Week in Battle Creek.

We are also planning to host two additional workshops to deliver the new program.  These will be geographically and otherwise logistically situated so as to give our men's program members the most reasonable opportunity to get the information on the new program first-hand.  Locations and dates for these additional workshops are still yet to be determined.  I will forward more information as it develops.

Re: 2007 Future Stars Update #1

There have been substantial changes made for 2007 Future Stars Season.  These changes are contained in a new document entitled “2007-2008 USA Gymnastics Future Stars Jr. National Development Team Program”.  This document is dated July 1, 2007 and is immediately in effect.  This document is only available through your State and or Regional Chairperson.  You must contact your State and or Regional Chairperson for information on how to obtain this document.  It is extremely important that you obtain and carefully read this document.  There have been substantial changes in the 12 year old division.  In addition there have also been minor changes to the 10 and 11 year old division.

Qualifying scores for the 2007 Future Stars National Championships:

bullet10 year old division: 76.00
bullet11 year old division: 76.00
bullet12 year old division: 72.00
bulletThe required score at the Future Stars National Championship for a 10 year old to qualify to compete at Level 9 in the 2007-2008 Age Group Competition Program is 81.00

General Clarifications for 2007:

bulletThe Future Stars Program will use the Age Group Competition Program’s Compulsory Presentation deductions of: small = 0.1, medium = 0.2, large = 0.3 and fall = 0.5.
bulletThe age 12 division will have the routines beginning with a start value of 9.2.  There will be 3 designated bonus skills, valued at .2 each and .2 virtuosity.   This start value pertains to the FS program only.
bulletThe age 12 Routines have been changed to a compulsory format.   This format meets the requirements of the Age Group Competition Program and can be directly utilized in Level 9 Competition without change.
bulletOn Vault: The under-arm swing technique or arm circle – Please note that the primary emphasis of these terms is to have the athlete move his arms to a position behind his center of gravity and then move the arms forward below the height of the shoulders during the hurdle to the board contact phase of the vault.  This can be accomplished using a circling type action or an arm-swing action.  The goal is to encourage an arm action which will aide in the efficient “loading” of the board at contact and to encourage a body position that will facilitate a strong rotation off of the board.
bulletThe age 12 Horizontal Bar routine includes a Jam.
bulletThe Flexibility routine has been rewritten and now includes a Back Walkover from the Bridge position, demonstrating shoulder flexibility and finishes in a standing salute.
bulletTrampoline has been added as an additional event for next quadrennium.  The routines have been written and are included in this document.  The plan is to include Trampoline at the 2007 National Evaluation as a clinic offering and to begin competition on Trampoline as an event in 2008.
